The First Lecture of “SJTU Humanities Distinguished International Lecture Series” Successfully Held

On October 27, 2023, the first lecture of “SJTU Humanities Distinguished International Lecture Series” was successfully held in the School of Humanities. The lecture invited Peter K. Bol, Chair Professor of Harvard University and members of his research team, Chen Song, Associate Professor of Bucknell University, and Wang Hongsu, Research Fellow of Harvard University.



Prof. Wang Ning, Dean of the School of Humanities at SJTU, extended his warmest welcome to Prof. Bol and his research team, and gave a brief introduction to Prof. Bol and his research.





Then, Prof. Bol delivered a lecture entitled “What are the Digital Humanities and Why are They Important?”. He explained the concept of digital humanities and introduced the relevant tools, databases and platforms. During the Q&A session, he further exchanged ideas with faculty and students from SJTU.




Later, “Hands-On Session on Prosopography Research Using the China Biographical Database Project (CBDB)” was held. Prof. Bol and his team explained how to use CBDB and other tools in research, and exchanged views with the audience.

The “SJTU Humanities Distinguished International Lecture Series” was initiated by the International Office of the School of Humanities at SJTU. Through inviting scholars from prominent overseas universities to introduce cutting-edge issues of humanities to faculty and students, it aims to further promote academic exchanges and collaboration between the School and overseas universities, and promote the discipline development and the cultivation of talents of the School.
