The predecessor of the Center for International Chinese Education of the School of Humanities is the School of International Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University founded in the year of 2000, of which its functions at that time included the enrollment, management and services for international students of the entire university, coordination and support work relating to the management of the Confucius Institutes founded by the university in other countries, as well as the teaching of Chinese languages to Speakers of other languages and related researches. In May 2015,the former School of International Education was reorganized with the former School of Humanities. The newly-established School of Humanities set up the Center for International Chinese Education specializing in Chinese Language teaching and researches.

The faculty of the Center includes 3 professors, 16 associate professors, 5 associate research fellows and 14 lecturers. The Center has 1 undergraduate program of Chinese language education and 3 master degree programs including master degree of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, professional master degree of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages(MTSCOL), and master program of International Chinese Language Teachers Training with full English immersion approach. Each year, an average of 500 degree-seeking students and 2500 non-degree-seeking students from more than 100 countries and regions study at the Center for International Chinese Education.

The Center has nearly 20 years of experience in terms of cultivating overseas students and international cooperation in students training; the Center aims to cultivate elites for other countries all over the world and international friends who can better understand China, and has thus made great contribution to improving the internationalization atmosphere on campus and implementing the universitys internationalization strategy. and has made outstanding contributions to improving cosmopolitan atmosphere and implementing the internationalization strategy in the university.
