On October 24, 2020, the Second SJTU International Young Scholars Forum on Humanities hosted by the School of Humanities (SOH), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) was held on Minhang Campus of SJTU. It was also one of the sub-forums for the First SJTU “Zhi Yuan” International Young Scholars Forum (on Humanities and Social Sciences). Over 20 outstanding young scholars from both at home and abroad were invited to attend the forum and their discussions focus on four topics including Chinese language and literature, history, philosophy and art education. All the opening ceremonies for both sub-forums and the main forum were held simultaneously online and offline.
At the opening ceremony of the main forum that took place on the morning of October 24, Gu Feng, Vice Secretary of SJTU’s CPC Committee, Zhao Zhen, Director of Division of Human Resources, SJTU and Gao Yankun, Vice Director of SJTU’s Division for Development of Liberal Arts shared with young scholars the history, characteristic disciplines, talents policy and the development of liberal arts of SJTU. The representatives of SJTU’s outstanding talents, Cheng Jinhua, Distinguished Professor of KoGuan School of Law, SJTU and Shang Biwu, Tenured Professor of the School of Foreign Languages, SJTU delivered a speech respectively.

At the opening ceremony of the sub-forum held in the School of Humanities, Qi Hong, Secretary of CPC Committee of SOH gave a detailed introduction to the history and development of the school. Zhang Zhongliang, Director and Distinguished Professor of Chinese Language and Literature Department, SOH, Li Yushang, Deputy Dean of SOH, Director and Professor of History Department, Chen Jiaming, Director and Distinguished Professor of Philosophy Department, Wang Jun, Associate Professor of International Chinese Education Center, Chen Lilin, Vice Secretary of SOH’s CPC Committee and Director of Art Education Center introduced their respective discipline development, academic research and talents pattern.

On the afternoon of the same day, the young scholars present conducted discussions and exchanges at six separate sessions according to their area of interest. They introduced their cutting-edge research and latest achievements in their own area of interests and made heated discussions with the guests from SOH and outside.
At the closing ceremony held on the afternoon, Zhang Quanzhi, Tenured Professor of Chinese Language and Literature Department, Jiang Qin, Associate Professor of History Department, Chen Yong, Associate Professor of Philosophy Department, Li Bailing, Professor of International Chinese Education Center, and Hu Qiping, the former Director of Art Education Center as representative of their discipline gave a speech respectively to introduce the academic exchanges and preliminary results at the sub-forum. Four representatives of young scholars, Feng Xiangjun, Yu Qiong, Zhou Hao and Hong Tian expressed their thanks to SOH for holding the forum and talked about their feelings respectively. Wang Ning, Dean of SOH, University Professor and Foreign Member of the European Academy of Sciences gave a concluding speech.
Hosted by the School of Humanities, the SJTU International Young Scholars Forum on Humanities is designed for outstanding young scholars all over the world. It is our hope that, through key lectures, seminars and talent exchanges, a platform will be established for worldwide young scholars with excellent academic background in literature, history, philosophy and art to promote understanding and share insights, that the development strategy, discipline construction, scientific research and faculty policies of SJTU and the School of Humanities can be fully understood, and that young scholars will be motivated to achieve their aspirations at SJTU, boosting the development of humanities.
