The First SJTU International Young Scholars Forum on Humanities Successfully Held

From 18-19 May 2019, the first SJTU International Young Scholars Forum on Humanities was successfully held by the School of Humanities on Minghang Campus, SJTU. Huang Zhen, Chair Professor and Vice President of SJTU, Liang Qi, Director of Division of Human Resources, Wang Ning, Dean of the School of Humanities, Qi Hong, Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Humanities, Gao Lei, Vice Secretary of the Party Committee, Wang Yushen, Vice Secretary of the Party Committee, Ding Xiaoping, Vice Dean, Wu Jianfeng, Vice Dean, heads of the school’s departments, representatives from the faculty, and more than 30 young scholars from home and abroad attended the opening ceremony on May 18th, 2019. The ceremony was hosted by Qi Hong.



Speech by Huang Zhen 


Huang Zhen, on behalf of SJTU, welcomed all the young scholars to the forum at SJTU. He then introduced the history, achievements, and features of SJTU.
 


Speech by Liang Qi 


Liang Qi introduced the talent policies and the cultivation of talents at SJTU. 


Speech by Wang Ning 


Wang Ning introduced the history and development of the School of Humanities and pointed out that the school would adhere to the principle of fostering virtue through education and strive to build itself into an internationally-recognized, first-class School of Humanities with distinct features through talent introduction, collaborative innovation, and intensive development.
 

Keynote Speeches by Ye Shuxian, Liu Shiyong, and Chen Jiaming 


After the opening ceremony, Ye Shuxian, University Professor from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Liu Shiyong, Distinguished Professor from the Department of History, and Chen Jiaming, Head of the Department of Philosophy gave keynote speeches respectively, sharing the latest academic achievements and trends in their fields.
 


Domain-specific Discussions 


In the afternoon, seven domain-specific discussions were held for young scholars to exchange their ideas. The scholars introduced their research directions, shared the frontier research and latest achievements, and had heated discussions with experts from the School of Humanities.


Team Building 


In the evening, the scholars participated in the team building and experienced rowing, strengthening their mutual understanding and trust and effectively promoting their communication and exchanges.

Talent Exchanges


On May 19th, 2019, young scholars visited the Tsung Dao Lee Library, the Main Library and the Exhibition Hall in Celebration of the 120th Anniversary of SJTU and were impressed by the achievements, library collections, facilities, and the campus culture of SJTU. In the afternoon, talent exchanges were held to help young scholars to have a better understanding of talent policies of the School of Humanities.

Closing Ceremony



Speeches by Young Scholars at the Closing Ceremony 



During the closing ceremony, the attendees watched a video clip of the forum, three experts from the School of Humanities introduced the achievements of the forum, and five young scholars shared their experiences in this event. Qi Hong then made a speech, stating that as the first attempt of the School of Humanities, this forum had fulfilled the expected outcomes with the joint efforts of the scholars, the faculty and the staff, and the school would continue to provide an academic platform for young scholars. She also invited the young scholars to join the school and achieve their aspirations here at SJTU.


Hosted by the School of Humanities, the First SJTU International Young Scholars Forum on Humanities is designed for outstanding young scholars all over the world. It is our hope that, through key lectures, seminars and talent exchanges, a platform will be established for worldwide young scholars with excellent academic background in literature, history, philosophy and art to promote understanding and share insights, that the development strategy, discipline construction, scientific research and faculty policies of SJTU and the School of Humanities can be fully understood, and that young scholars will be motivated to achieve their aspirations in SJTU, boosting the development of Humanities.
