Shanghai Jiao Tong University has always paid much attention to the humanities education. As early as back to the year of 1908, SJTU had set up the Department of Humanities. Mr.Tang Wenzhi, then president of the university, was himself one of the principal teachers for teaching of Chinese Language with his unique tone of Tang Dynasty for chanting poems, which has been considered as the precious cultural heritage. Many Masters of humanities including Gu Hongming, Cai Yuanpei, Zhang Yuanji, Fu Lei, Li Shutong, Huang Yanpei and Shao Lizi either studied or taught at the school successively.
After restructuring and reforming many times, Shanghai Jiao Tong University set up the Department of Social Sciences and Engineering as well as the Department of Literature and Art in 1985, which was the basis of the establishment of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences in 1997.
In 2003, the School of Humanities with main disciplines covering literature, history, philosophy and art was officially founded; at this stage, the basic discplines of humanities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University have thus entered a new development period.
The establishment of the new School of Humanities through merging the original School of Humanities and School of International Education on May 12, 2015 has opened a new chapter for the development of the school.
